The "World Trade Statistical Review" series provides a detailed analysis of the latest developments in world trade. It will be produced on an annual basis and replaces the series "International Trade Statistics" the WTO's former annual statistical publication.

This annual report by the Director-General looks at the latest trade policy measures undertaken by WTO members and observers. These includes measures that facilitate as well as restrict the flow of trade. It is one of two trade monitoring reports published each year covering the whole WTO membership. This trade monitoring function is overseen by the WTO's Trade Policy Review Body.

La surveillance des politiques commerciales nationales est une activité d'une importance fondamentale pour les travaux de l'OMC. Elle repose principalement sur le Mécanisme d'examen des politiques commerciales (MEPC). Tous les Membres de l'OMC font l'objet d'un examen dont la fréquence varie en fonction de leur part dans le commerce mondial. Pour chaque examen deux documents sont établis: une déclaration de politique générale établie par le gouvernement visé par l'examen et un rapport détaillé rédigé de manière indépendante par le Secrétariat de l’OMC. Ces deux rapports ainsi que les conclusions du Président de l’Organe d’examen des politiques commerciales sont publiés peu après la réunion.

La vigilancia de las políticas comerciales nacionales es una actividad fundamental en la labor de la OMC. El núcleo de esta labor es el Mecanismo de Examen de las Políticas Comerciales (MEPC). Todos los Miembros de la OMC son objeto de examen si bien la frecuencia con que se realiza el examen de cada país depende de su nivel de participación en el comercio mundial. Para cada examen se preparan dos documentos: una exposición de políticas preparada por el Gobierno del país objeto de examen y un informe detallado elaborado independientemente por la Secretaría de la OMC. Ambos informes se publican poco después del examen junto con conclusiones del Presidente del Órgano de Examen de las Políticas Comerciales.

“Les examens des politiques commerciales” analysent les politiques et pratiques commerciales de chaque Membre de l'OMC. Les examens comprennent trois grandes parties: un rapport indépendant établi par le Secrétariat de l'OMC un rapport établi par le gouvernement et les remarques finales formulées par le Président de l'Organe d'examen des politiques commerciales de l'OMC. La première section - “Principales données sur le commerce” - donne un aperçu visuel des principales exportations/importations du Membre de l'OMC considéré des principales destinations de ses exportations des origines de ses importations et d'autres données clés. La présente édition examine les pratiques commerciales du Canada.

The 2010 WTO Annual Report provides a brief summary of the organization and a detailed review of its activities in 2009. It also includes a personal message from the Director-General who reflects on the events of 2009 the impact of the financial crisis and the challenges that lie ahead. The main part of the Report is divided into the five principal areas of activity of the WTO: trade negotiations ─ outlining the latest developments in the Doha Round implementation and monitoring ─ describing how WTO agreements are being implemented and the organisation's trade monitoring role dispute settlement ─ summarizing the commercial disputes brought by WTO members to the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body in 2009 building trade capacity ─ outlining the WTO's efforts to help developing countries improve their trade capacity outreach ─ detailing how the WTO maintains dialogue with a variety of audiences. “Persistent” economic challenges continued to weigh on trade in 2016: Director-General Roberto Azevêdo’s annual overview of developments in the international trading system highlights the “persistent” global economic challenges in 2016 that continue to weigh on international trade. The report which was discussed at a 9 December meeting of the WTO’s Trade Policy Review Body urges members to work together to ensure that the benefits of trade are more widely spread and better understood.

This publication is a quick source for national and trade statistics of WTO Members and countries which are in the process of negotiating WTO membership. These Trade Profiles combine information on trade flows and trade policy measures of Members Observers and other selected economies. The information is retrieved from various WTO Divisions and external sources and presented in standardized format for quick reference. The indicators are divided into five categories: Basic economic indicators – population GDP current account balance etc. Trade policy indicators – specific WTO relevant information including tariff binding information import duties collected in total tax revenue the number of dispute rulings(complainant defendant) notifications outstanding and contingency measures in force. Merchandise trade indicators (customs based statistics) – information on total trade flows broken down by broad product categories and major origins and destinations. Commercial services indicators (balance of payments based statistics) – trends in total trade flows and a breakdown by major components. Industrial property indicators – annual number of patents granted and marks registered in the name of residents and non residents in the economy.

The World Trade Report is a new annual WTO publication focused on trade trends and policy issues. The 2003 edition examines developments in South-South trade trends in commodity markets and the growth of Regional Trade Agreements.

DDG Agah notes no acceleration of new restrictions urges more trade transparency: Deputy Director-General Yonov Frederick Agah in presenting the Director-General’s report on trade-related developments (mid-November 2013 to mid-May 2014) to the Trade Policy Review Body on 11 July 2014 said that “the pace at which new trade restrictions have been introduced has not accelerated during the period under review”. He urged members to provide more trade information for the monitoring reports: “I am convinced and the Director-General’s recent meetings with business groups have confirmed this that members must accept their collective responsibility for promoting the transparency and predictability which importers and exporters demand”.

The WTO’s latest Trade Monitoring Report on G20 trade measures shows a slowdown in the number and coverage of trade-restrictive and trade-facilitating measures on goods implemented by G20 countries between mid-May and mid-October 2020 primarily as a result of the sharp decline in overall global trade since the COVID-19 outbreak. The report also documents numerous trade-facilitating and support measures introduced by G20 economies in response to the economic downturn in order to prepare the ground for a strong economic recovery.

Joint study: restrictive measures continue apace accrued restraints hit 3% of imports: The seventh WTO-OECD-UNCTAD report for the G-20 on trade and investment restrictions reveals that government-imposed trade and investment restrictions have not slowed and that the pace of removing such obstacles has decelerated. The accumulation of such restraints means that nearly 3% of global imports are affected while the restrictions now impact nearly 4% of G-20 trade.

En el caso del comercio de servicios se hace un desglose detallado por servicios de transporte viajes y otros servicios comerciales. La publicación contiene asimismo estadísticas sobre propiedad intelectual. Se ofrece información respecto de todos los Miembros y observadores de la OMC y de otras economías. Los datos de cada economía se presentan en un práctico formato de dos páginas lo que proporciona un panorama sucinto del comercio mundial. One of the main objectives of this Report is to analyze whether WTO provisions provide a balance between supplying governments with necessary flexibility to face difficult economic situations and adequately defining them in a way that limits their use for protectionist purposes. In analysing this question the Report focuses primarily on contingency measures available to WTO members when importing and exporting goods. These measures include the use of safeguards such as tariffs and quotas in specified circumstances anti-dumping duties on goods that are deemed to be “dumped” and countervailing duties imposed to offset subsidies. The Report also discusses alternative policy options including the renegotiation of tariff commitments the use of export taxes and increases in tariffs up to their legal maximum ceiling or binding. The analysis includes consideration of legal economic and political economy factors that influence the use of these measures and their associated benefits and costs.

L'Examen statistique du commerce mondial 2017 examine les faits nouveaux survenus dans le commerce mondial en livrant une analyse détaillée des tendances les plus récentes concernant le commerce des marchandises et des services.

The WTO’s new Trade Monitoring Report issued on 21 November shows that G20 economies from mid-May to mid-October 2019 introduced import-restrictive measures covering an estimated USD 460.4 billion worth of traded merchandise. This represents a 37% increase over the previous period going back to mid-October 2018 and is second only to the USD 480.9 billion coverage of import-restricting measures reported between mid-May and mid-October 2018. The report notes that with restrictions accumulating over time the share of global trade covered by such measures has soared. Lamy reports no slowdown in new trade restrictions: Director-General Pascal Lamy in his report on trade-related developments issued on 29 June 2012 said that “there has been no slowdown in the imposition of new trade restrictions over the past seven months”. He noted that “the more recent wave of trade restrictions seems no longer to be aimed at combatting the temporary effects of the global crisis but rather at trying to stimulate recovery through national industrial planning which is a an altogether longer-term affair”.

Trade policy restraint by G20 economies as well as WTO members more broadly prevented a destructive acceleration of protectionist trade measures that would have further hurt the world economy according to the WTO’s latest Trade Monitoring Report. But WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala cautioned that obstacles to trade remain in place and continue to undermine global efforts to increase and diversify the production of vaccines.

Globalization is widely seen as a powerful engine that has the potential to promote growth and development but concerns have been raised about the effects of globalization on jobs and wages. This book co-published by the International Labour Office and the World Trade Organization discusses ways of making globalization socially sustainable.

The WTO’s 20th monitoring report on Group of 20 (G20) trade measures issued on 22 November shows that the amount of trade covered by new import-restrictive measures hit a new high during the current reporting period. The estimated US$ 481 billion in trade coverage of these new measures imposed by G20 economies from mid-May to mid-October 2018 is more than six times larger than that recorded in the previous reporting period and the largest since this measure was first calculated in 2012. The report also shows that the trade coverage of new import-facilitating measures (US$ 216 billion) rose significantly during this period but is less than half that of trade-restrictive measures. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo warned the report’s findings constitute a source of serious concern and called for immediate action to de-escalate the situation.
